Move SKUs between rules with automations
An automation moves a SKU to a different rule when something changes, so you don't have to. You can use it to get more aggressive as stock ages or stops selling, or to change approach as stock runs low. You set automations on a rule, on its Automations tab.
The three automations
- If no orders in last X days then set rule to: for SKUs that have stopped selling.
- If stock level drops to X units then set rule to: for stock that's running low.
- If stock ages by X days or more then set rule to: for older stock that needs to move.
A rule can use more than one, and each can point to a different rule.
Set one up
- Create the destination rule first. The rule you're moving SKUs to has to exist. Clearance rules are a common choice.
- Open the rule the SKUs are on now. Go to the Automations tab.
- Switch on the automation you want. Enter your number and choose the destination rule.
- Decide whether SKUs should come back. For stock level and ageing, a second switch appears. See automation walk-back.
- Update the rule.
Build a rule chain
A chain is a series of rules linked by automations, so pricing changes in stages. For example:
- Rule A moves SKUs to rule B when ageing reaches 90 days.
- Rule B moves them to rule C when ageing reaches 120 days.
- Rule C moves them to rule D when ageing reaches 180 days.
The numbers here are only an example, so choose ones that suit your stock. Each step can have a lower minimum or sharper matching than the last. A SKU can walk down the whole chain over time, and you can mix automation types in one chain.
Moving a SKU by hand
Moving a SKU by hand can affect when a no-orders automation next applies.
Bulk Changes has a Reset ‘Last Order’ Clock switch for this. It's on by default, and you can turn it off.
Check what happened
Automations run by themselves, and a move isn't always instant. Every move is recorded in SKU Rule History, along with the threshold that triggered it.
